Vuurberg Reserve Red 2017

By , 22 September 2020

Previous vintages of the Vuurberg Reserve Red as made by the acclaimed Donovan Rall often had declared alcohols of 15% and consequently made for what you might euphemistically refer to as “hearty drinking”. The 2017 has an alcohol of 14.5% and while it’s not exactly shy or retiring, it’s a more enticing proposition than some of its predecessors.

Consisting of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Petit Verdot from Stellenbosch and 9% Cinsault from Swartland, the nose shows red and blackberries, clove, rosemary, cigar box and earth. The palate is full but balanced, not without fresness and nicely smooth textured. Price: R270 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
