Reimagining Mourvèdre.
Mourvèdre can be a bit wild and woolly but the Circumstance 2015 from Waterkloof in Somerset West is a lot more cultured than some. From bush vines, winemaking involved spontaneous, whole-bunch fermentation while maturation lasted 16 months in older 600-litre barrels.
The nose shows red and black fruit, floral perfume, scrub and earth. The palate meanwhile is light and fresh with fine-grained tannins, a slightly salty quality to the finish. All in all, a super-tasty drop. Wine Cellar price: R185 a bottle.

Hi Dean, The Waterkloof is pretty close to TMW Hitch in style but perhaps a little more carefully worked – it would be fun to drink them side by side. I share your enthusiasm for the Qaisar and if you haven’t tried Testalonga El Bandito Monkey Gone to Heaven 2016, you should. A couple of years ago, I wasn’t inclined to put much stock in local Mourvedre, but it’s starting to shape as a very exciting variety.

So closer to the TMW Hitch than the Qaisar in style? When I tasted the TMW Qaisar last year, I thought it was phenomenal .
