Waterkloof Seriously Cool Cinsault 2016

Huffing and puffing.
The 2016 vintage was extremely hot and dry and this seems to have impacted on the Seriously Cool Cinsault from Waterkloof (grapes from Stellenbosch vineyards planted in 1964 and 1974) which has a slight awkwardness about it compared to previous vintages.
On the nose, black fruit, some floral perfume, a hint of spice plus a particular herbal note. The palate is medium bodied with pretty good freshness but the tannins are very firm, almost bitter. A bit rustic, posing the question once again as to how much we should realistically expect from this variety. Wine Cellar price: R120 a bottle.

I opened Duncan Savage Wines ‘Dirt Track’ 2014 Cinsaut last night for my tasting group. I thought it was gorgeous, probably the best Cinsaut I’d tasted but it split the group.
Soft and drinkable, subtle, no noticebale tannins, ideal luncheon wine.
BTW – how come Cape wines are now inserting an ‘L’ in the variety name; Cinsaut is a good differentiator to say l’look anew’ this isn’t the old southern French wine that no one wanted to drink and made to be bought up by the EU

Peter, I have heard from my colleagues that some have gotten in trouble in Europe when it wasn’t spelled “correctly” (i.e. with the L). One producer had to uplift and relabel the wine.
