Wightman, Gouws and Clarke Dry Red 2016

Serve chilled.

This is a joint venture between Andrew Wightman from Môrelig farm on the Paardeberg mountain in Swartland, Jurgen Gouws who makes his own wines under the Intellego label and David and Jeannette Clarke, owners of a wine agency called Ex Animo Wine Co.

Grapes were picked on 15 January and then fermented whole bunch and semi-carbonic for seven days before some seven months in old 228-litre barrels – 810 bottles made. On the nose, cherry and strawberry, herbs and spice. The palate meanwhile is light (alcohol is 12%) but intensely flavoured. Most definitely new wave in style, the wine nevertheless has Pinotage’s generosity of fruit about it which makes it great fun to drink. Wine Cellar price: R135 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 92/100.
