Winshaw new releases

Pierre Winshaw, part of the family farming Klein Welmoed on Baden Powell Drive, says they and neighbouring properties Meerlust, Vergenoegd and Croydon have been lobbying for the declaration of a new Stellenbosch ward, to be known as Eersterivier. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:

Malbec 2024
Price: R300
Matured for 12 months in older oak. Red and black berries, a certain meaty quality and spice on the nose. Concentrated fruit, bright acidity and firm but not coarse tannins, the finish savoury. Alc: 14%.

Bill Winshaw 2022
Price: R350
57% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot. Matured for 12 months in barrel, 14% new. Enticing aromatics of red and black berries, an attractive herbal note, a hint of rose, pencil shavings, earth and oak spice. The palate shows pure fruit, bright acidity and fine tannins, the finish long and dry – a wine of real composure. Alc: 14.57%.

Charles Winshaw 2022
Price: R350
50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 25% Merlot. Matured for 12 months in barrel, 25% new. Plums, berries, vanilla and spice on the nose. The palate is powerful and polished – there’s an initial sweetness before a savoury finish. Alc: 14.5%.

The Fox Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
Price: R260
From vineyards planted in 2018. Matured for 18 months in older oak. Pretty aromatics of red berries, rose and fresh herbs. Juicy and fresh with fine tannins – modest in scale but balanced and thoroughly appealing. Alc: 14%.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
Price: R450
Matured for 12 months in barrel, 25% new. Cassis, a hint of mint, toast and pencil shavings on the nose. Luscious fruit, the extraction lending smoothness and a firmness to the finish – an opulent rendition, confidently executed. Alc: 14.5%.
