Roan Ranger is a red blend made by nègociant Charles Withington who lives in Darling and sources grapes from the area. It’s usually Cinsault dominated along with Grenache and Mourvèdre, but in the case of the 2018, the Grenache component turned out to be “absolutely stunning” and is now the lead variety at 68%.

The nose is very perfumed with notes of rose, pomegranate and dried herbs as well as red fruit while the palate is light-bodied with lemon-like acidity and a salty finish. Pure and poised with ultra-fine tannins, this sells for R95 a bottle from The Darling Wine Shop – fantastic quality relative to price.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
