Zorgvliet Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

By , 21 April 2023

If 2019 was generally a vintage of restraint for Stellenbosch reds, then the wines from 2020 seem that more luscious and open. The 2019 from Zorgvliet, for instance, had an alcohol 14.19% and presented as rich but not short of freshness – it placed Top 10 in last year’s category Report as sponsored by Prescient.

The 2020 comes in at 14.7% and includes 2.5% Merlot and 2.5% Petit Verdot. Attractive aromatics of dark berries, violets some leafiness, violets, vanilla and pencil shavings while the palate is round and plush – concentrated fruit and smooth tannins make this a wine that will please many but I thought it was a little lacking in refreshment and structure. Price: R180 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 90/100.
