David Aristargos 2014

By , 29 April 2015

On show at the Swartland Independent Wyn, Kos en Kultuur Skou this past Saturday were new vintages from David and Nadia Sadie. I’ve always considered the white blend Aristargos superior to the single-varietal Chenin Blanc but I think this time around they’ve closed the gap considerably.

David Chenin Blanc 2014
Approximate retail price: R220

Pear, peach and citrus, a little honeysuckle and some yeastiness. Good fruit concentration without being weighty – tight and focused with a savoury, almost bitter finish. Very satisfying to drink.

Score: 92/100.

Approximate retail price: R240

35% Chenin Blanc, 25% Roussanne, 20% Clairette Blanche, 15% Viognier and 5% Semillon (the latter for the first time). Lime, pear, peach as well as what can only be described as a certain grapey-ness. Also spice and fynbos. Excellent fruit purity, excellent range of flavour. Zippy acidity which gives the wine a lip-smacking quality. Good length on the finish. More accomplished than ever.

Score: 94/100.
