On a recent quick trip to Cape Town I noted that most restaurants run by celebrity chefs have eyewatering mark-ups. Rocking Horse current vintage R800, glass of Saurwein Riesling R150, small ordinary glass, not a Zalto. My suggestion is to look for some of the smaller independent restaurants.
Looking at the above prices and the prices we paid at Mosaic, Chantel and team were offering excellent value!

Please can you tell us more about The Red Room? Your favourite dish? What do you think of the winelist? And maybe another pic or two? Or is this an ad?

You can check the menu on the Mount Nelson website, basically set menu at R900 per person.
As for the wine list, VERY steep pricing. I noted a Meerlust Rubicon at R3600 or so , that’s an 8 times coefficient

That is absolutely bonkers, Gilles (unless it’s a 1987 magnum or something). And it’s more than eight times, because they buy at trade prices.

I double checked again. Its a Meerlust Rubicon 2017 retailing at R3000
So probably 8 times if bought on release year at Trade Price

R3000 for a bottle of Rubicon. Wow.

Meerlust Estate selling 2016 Rubicon for R1315 (1.5L) and 2018 for R548 (750ml), the latter available at Wine Cellar for R505. Takealot selling Rubicon for R479pb. In March this year a 6x750ml case of the 2015 sold on auction for R7035, i.e. R1172 a bottle . Can the Mount Nelson hotel’s Red Room justify R3000 for a bottle of the 2017? Mmmm

Clearly at this price level, they are not catering for the South Africans. Even the wealthy ones would hopefully know what is the correct price for this wine.

Hi Mike, This news snippet features as a matter of record – in the past, we found that in-depth restaurant reviews did not generate enough traffic to justify the expense of generating them.
