Danie Steytler Senior of Stellenbosch property Kaapzicht died today from cancer at the age of 72.
Steytler matriculated at Paul Roos Gymnasium before pursuing studies in agriculture. What is today Kaapzicht was founded by Steytler’s grandfather in 1946, and for a long while supplied grapes to the bigger wine companies. Steytler, however, had greater ambitions and the first wine under own label appeared in 1984.
He is survived by wife Yngvild, his son Danie (who became winemaker in 2009) and daughter Quinne plus grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, 11 January at 10h00 at Kaapzicht.

Classmate of 1970 PRG matric year, dear friend and courageous fighter to the end. I’ll miss you Danie and look forward to when we meet again when I too am recalled. I have a nice baby avocado tree to plant now here on our island. This tree I will name after you and continue our chats every day whilst working. Dave

Just a massive hole now left in my life which you once filled. Going to miss those monthly breakfasts we had at your home, the cammaradie , good laughs and stories of our times together up there in Angola.
To Yngvild Danie jr. and Quinne, my deepest condolences. There are no words any one can offer to placate such a loss. A very humble and gentle man but as tough as teak and a great buddy in all occasions. Sleep well my friend until we meet again.

What a heartbreaking story. I also know the farm his father and Bros David and George, I don’t wether they are still with him. One of my school friends Jakobus Jansen used to stay there..he passed on years ago…he lost his life tragically on his first job since leaving school. He worked for Case Tractors. I believe the were bussy unpacking new pars..these normal one in big crates witch have to buy offloaded by crane or hyster.somehow his head was crushed between two crates while this crates where loaded of. 💔..yes like sand through the hour glass is the days of our lives…. Thank you for your GOOD Relationship with you workers…God Bless Kaapzicht and the Settlers.

He truly was an amazing man and such a kind man. He brought his friends to my safe house on a rugby day in New lands. They would do secret wine tasting and have a braai before going to watch the rugby. Once or twice the wives joined.
My sincere condolences to Yngvild and his son and daughter 🙏

Such an amazing man of which I have not met anyone else to compare.
Generous, compassionate, sincere and humble. I knew Danie over a long period of time whilst I exported SA wines and no matter how infrequent we met he was always friendly and available.
Infact on one DTI mission we both travelled on to Brazil he told me a mythical story of his time uo in the border conflict of how his life was spared by some unknown force and he also told me how his cancer then had miraculously disappeared of which his oncology doctor could not explain.
Such a loss for the South African wine making community.
My heart goes out to Yngvild and Danie jnr and their daughter I never met.

Danie was and will remain a point of reference in our lives. He was passionate about his work, his family and his friends. He was honest to a fault and faced the many challenges that life brought him courageously …often turning them into opportunities. His enduring love and respect for his wife Yngvild serves is an example to all entering the institution of marriage. All strength to Yngvild Danie Quinne and families.
