Nederburg Auction 2017 sales figures
By Christian Eedes, 17 September 2017
Total sales were just over R6.34 million (unaudited) for some 8 800 litres of wine (129 items from 65 producers) at this year’s Nederburg Auction – a rough calculation putting the average price per litre at approximately R725, slightly down on the all-time record of R740 achieved last year.
Meerlust Bordeaux Blend 1978 (an experimental wine which preceded the 1980 maiden release of Rubicon) achieved a Nederburg Auction record price per 750ml bottle at R16 000 – the single three-bottle lot going to an Angolan buyer.
South Africa accounted for 70% of total sales. The biggest share of foreign buyers came from Taiwan at 6.5% of total sales. Domestically, buyers from the Western Cape dominated with 60% of overall sales, a direct result of the increase in wine collectors adding to their private portfolios.
