Alto Estate Blend 2016

By , 8 March 2021

The drought vintage of 2016 is much disparaged and, in many instances, rightfully so but the Estate Blend from Stellenbosch property Alto defies expectations.

Consisting of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, the component parts were matured separately for 18 months in new French oak before blending. The nose shows red and black berries, violets, spice and some undergrowth while the palate combines concentration with balance and character. Benefitting from being not too youthful, it shows layers of flavour, good freshness and fine tannins while the finish is long and dry. Price: R395 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
