Anthonij Rupert Merlot 2018
By Christian Eedes, 11 August 2024
For a while now, Merlot has seemed the most difficult red wine category in South Africa, even more so than Pinotage or Pinot Noir. The 2018 from Anthonij Rupert, however, impresses – if the variety is meant to deliver lush fruit and velvety tannins, this does so well.
Grapes predominantly from Franschhoek but a small portion from Groenekloof, fermentation occurred spontaneously while maturation lasted 24 months in barrel, 50% new. The nose shows red and black berries, oystershell, dried herbs and cigar box while the palate is full bodied without sacrificing refinement or balance (alc: 14.5%). With great depth of flavour and tannins that already quite mellow, this is drinking well right now. Price: R450 a bottle.
CE’s rating: 93/100.
