Arniston Bay Shiraz 2021

After I recently suggested that there was a market shortage of “light reds”, Stellenbosch Vineyards were compelled to send me a bottle of the Shiraz 2021 under the entry-level Arniston Bay label.

How much to expect from a wine selling for R79 a bottle? Grapes from Stellenbosch vineyards, winemaking involved whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 10 months in older oak. The nose shows red and black berries, lavender, fynbos and white pepper while the palate is light and fresh with fine tannins, the finish possessing a pleasant saltiness. With moderate alcohol at 13.85% and no ingratiating sweetness (RS is 2.11g/l), I have to say I found it a cleverly executed and remarkably likeable drop.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
