Punctilious.

Kevin Grant of Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge property Ataraxia has long had a reputation for making high-quality Chardonnay but the 2018 is the most impressive in a while. Intense citrus plus a hint of appealing yeasty character on the nose follows through to a palate that displays concentrated fruit and a lovely line of acidity – refreshing yet not too aggressive. Very well balanced with a long and savoury finish. “On point” is an Americanism I’m not particularly fond of but this really is.  Price: R330 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 93/100.

Hopefully we’ll hear from the winemaker in this regard. Which would he consider his finest Ataraxia Chardonnay, his personal favourite: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2015 or a more recent vintage perhaps?

To date, has anyone topped Kevin’s 2007 Chard?
