Hipster Chardonnay is just about a contradiction in terms but the Bizoe Idioglossia 2018 as made by Rikus Neethling from Elgin fruit might just qualify. Spontaneously fermented and matured for nine months in a combination of new and second-fill oak, it has an alcohol of only 12% and comes across as very lean and direct. Subtle aromatics of citrus, green apple and slight herbal note plus some leesy complexity before a palate that’s light-bodied with bright acidity and a saline finish. Price: R160 a bottle.
