BLANKbottle Familiemoord 2022

By , 25 July 2023

Always distinctive when it comes to branding, Pieter Walser chooses to name his Piekenierskloof Grenache as Familiemoord (“family murder”) in reference to a convoluted story that saw him mistakenly suspected of killing his son…

Nothing too grisly about the 2022. Grapes come from an old-vine Piekenierskloof vineyard, juice drained off to allow skins and pulp to also undergo spontaneous fermentation. Maturation, meanwhile, last 10 months in older oak.

Fragrant aromatics of rose, strawberry, a light fynbos note and white pepper. The palate is succulent with fresh acidity and soft tannins, although there’s nothing sweet about it. A real charmer despite the name. Price: R315 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
