BLANKBottle Orbitofrontal Cortex 2016
By Christian Eedes, 4 September 2017
Pieter Walser, winner of the Grand Prix at the Wine Label Design Awards 2015, has always eschewed conventional means of marketing his wines relying on QR codes and the Internet to tell his story and then trusting in word-of-mouth recommendations but now says that his business has grown to such an extent that you may actually find his wines in your favourite wine shop going forwards.
The Orbitofrontal Cortex 2016 (named after the part of your brain where conscious decisions are made – read more here) is a blend Grenache Blanc, Fernão Pires, Chenin Blanc, Verdelho, Semillon and Clairette Blanche. As might be inferred from the components of the blend, it’s a complex wine. Pear, white peach, earth and spice on the nose while the palate is lean and very flavourful with bright acidity and a pithy finish. As with just about everything Walser does, it’s demanding but rewarding. Price: R169 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 94/100.
