Is the new Goldmine White 2024 from Boekenhoutskloof a companion wine to hugely successful red blend The Chocolate Block? It’s been launched with a minimum of fanfare but regardless of where it fits into the portfolio, it’s hugely impressive.

Consisting of 53% Chenin Blanc from Swartland, 24% Chardonnay from Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, 19% Semillon from Franschhoek and 4% Viognier, it was matured in a combination of barrel, foudre, concrete egg and amphora.

The aromatics are complex: Flowers, hay, herbs, citrus – initially lime and lemon then orange as the wine opens – peach, vanilla, and spice. The palate is beautifully balanced – great fruit expression and snappy but not sharp acidity, the finish long and savoury (alc: 13%). Superbly judged, with equal measures of depth and breadth, energy and texture. Assured and precise Price: R295 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 96/100.

High plaudits indeed and for a debutant at that!

Tasted it at Cape Wine 2025 in October – Nice wine but not sure its in the 95+ points league! It is certainly a wine I want to like, so that it can become a study accompaniment to the Chocolate Block red, a wine I admire for its quality and volumes. But you obviously caught it on a very good biodynamic day!
