Boekenhoutskloof Semillon 2021

By , 6 June 2024

While the 2020 vintage of Semillon from Franschhoek cellar has a rather pronounced reductive character about it, the 2021 less so and is altogether better realised.

Grapes from three Franschhoek blocks, planted in 1902, 1936 and 1942 respectively, and also including a small portion of Muscat d’Alexandrie established in 1902, winemaking involved the Sem undergoing spontaneous fermentation and maturation lasting 14 months in a combination of new 224-litre barrels (70%) and concrete eggs (30%) while the Muscat was skin-fermented and matured in clay.

The nose shows lime, peach, blackcurrant, jasmine and hay with just a hint of flinty reduction in the background. The palate is taut but not severe – pure fruit and fresh acidity before a long finish (alc: 13.57%). This doesn’t overwhelm but rather enchants on account of its elegance and composure. Price: R525 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 95/100.
