Boschkloof Epilogue Syrah 2014
By Christian Eedes, 16 September 2016
Tim Atkin MW made the Epilogue Syrah 2014 from Boschkloof in Stellenbosch his Overall Red Wine of the Year with a score of 98 on the 100-point quality scale in his South Africa Special Report 2016 (available for purchase here) and it is indeed a remarkable wine.
On the nose, red and black berries, fynbos, white pepper and spice. The palate is medium bodied, flavourful and balanced with a persistent finish. Lovely fruit delineation and lovely texture, the tannins fine and mouth-coating. There’s real snap and crunch to the wine – so approachable now but also promising much in time to come.
I’d stop short of scoring it 98 as it doesn’t have the depth of a great Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine or the evanescence of Pinot Noir, but to give Atkin his due, this instantly becomes a modern South African wine industry benchmark. LiquorCity Claremont price: R759.99 a bottle.
#WinemagRating: 96/100.
