Bosman Family Vineyards Optenhorst Chenin Blanc 2016
By Christian Eedes, 26 June 2019
The Bosmans of Bosman Family Vineyards own the third oldest Chenin Blanc vineyard in South Africa, this Wellington block planted in 1952.
Winemaker Corlea Fourie makes a top-end wine from it, the current-release 2016 involving spontaneous fermentation before maturation lasting six months in old oak. Amber in colour, the nose shows floral top notes before naartjie and orange plus ginger and other spice while the palate is rich – concentrated fruit matched by tangy acidity with a little bit of phenolic grip to the finish (alcohol: 13.01%). It’s a characterful drop as you might expect from a vineyard over 60 years old. Price: R350 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 91/100.
