Grapes from a 1957 vineyard on Citrusdal Mountain, this Chenin Blanc as made by Ginny Povall is an essential purchase every year for connoisseurs of the variety. The 2020, spontaneously fermented and matured for five months in older 400-litre barrels, shows quite pronounced flinty reduction before cut apple, stone fruit and a hint of spice on the nose while the palate is full and intensely flavoured – concentrated and tangy before a super-savoury finish. Lots going on but perhaps less precise and refined than the stellar 2019. Price: R450 a bottle.
