Callender Peak Chardonnay 2020

By , 4 November 2022

Callender Peak Chardonnay is certified W.O. Ceres Plateau, the vines situated in the Agterwitzenberg Valley, some 850m above sea level and ungrafted. Winemaking is by the much-admired Donovan Rall, this involving spontaneous fermentation and maturation lasting 10 months in old oak.

The nose shows pronounced lime and lemon, some struck-match reduction, yeasty complexity and a hint of vanilla while the palate has a good core for fruit, zippy acidity and a savoury finish. It’s pure and punchy, perhaps short of some nuance but rather it was a little backward than too evolved at this early stage. Price: R270 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
