Darling Old Bush Vines Chenin Blanc 2016

Unbudging.

The Harold Eedes Trophy for Best Chenin Blanc at this year’s Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show went to the Old Bush Vines 2016 from Darling Cellars, grapes from 38 and 39 year old vineyards, only 1 642 bottles made and the wine selling for R183 a bottle.

It’s a particularly understated rendition with elusive notes of citrus and white peach on the nose while the palate is pure and fresh with a lightly pithy finish. I currently find it lean and tightly wound (alc. 13.36%, RS 2.17g/l, TA 6.26g/l and pH 3.2) and suspect it will be better in two to three years from now.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.
