David & Nadia Single Vineyard new releases
By Christian Eedes, 25 July 2024
If the David & Nadia standard range wines are expressions of Swartland as a whole (the latest releases reviewed here) involving blending of grapes from multiple sites, the Single Vineyard wines sees the couple using Chenin Blanc to unlock the secrets of four distinct plots of land. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:
Hoë-Steen 2023
Price: R940
Grapes from a 1968 vineyard on deep iron-rich clay situated to the west of Malmesbury. Exotic aromatics of yellow peach, Golden Delicious apple, a hint of pineapple and some leesy complexity. The palate shows dense fruit matched by fresh acidity and a slightly bitter finish. A wine with a pleasing roundness and succulence to it. Alc: 13%.
CE’s rating: 95/100.
Skaliekop 2023
Price: R940
Grapes from a Paardeberg planted in 1985 on an unusual shale outcrop in the mostly granitic soils of the Paardeberg. Lime, green apple and fynbos on the nose. The palate is harmonious and utterly unambiguous – crystalline fruit and racy acidity before a finish that is long and dry. Alc: 13%.
CE’s rating: 97/100.
Plat’bos 2023
Price: R940
Grapes from a Paardeberg vineyard planted in 1981 on granite. Top notes of potpourri and fynbos before lime, peach and green apple. The palate is linear with driving acidity and an extremely savoury finish. As ever, a singular wine in its clarity and laser-like focus. Alc: 11%.
CE’s rating: 96/100.
Rondevlei 2023
Price: R940
Grapes from a 1984 vineyard on iron-rich gravel situated to the west of Malmesbury. The nose shows some flinty reduction before pear, peach, soft citrus and potpourri. The palate has excellent depth of fruit, fresh acidity and dry finish. Relatively broad, the flavours subtle and intricate. Alc: 13%.
CE’s rating: 96/100.
