De Grendel De Tijger Merlot 2022

By , 5 November 2025

While local Merlot often struggles to win over critics, it remains hugely popular with the wine-drinking public. It’s been a key part of the Durbanville property De Grendel’s portfolio since the maiden 2004 vintage, and the winery has now added what might be considered a reserve bottling called De Tijger.

Matured for 12 months in 225-litre barrels, 10% new oak. Aromas of red and black berries, violets, herbs, earth and a hint of olive. The palate is medium-bodied – not massively structured but harmonious and full of life. Precise made, it’s smooth texture will please many punters. Alc: 14.57%.

From a 20-year-old block, with yields reduced to 6t/ha (compared to 9–10t/ha for the standard release) to enhance concentration. The palate is medium-bodied with pure fruit, lively acidity and fine-grained tannins. Serious but not at all forbidding. Alc: 14.06%.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
