De Trafford new releases
By Christian Eedes, 21 October 2025
De Trafford Winery sits on the Mont Fleur farm, 380 m above Stellenbosch between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains. The property was purchased in 1976 with high-altitude slopes, which was previously wild grazing land, identified as ideal for premium red varieties. Early plantings in the 1980s were limited by quota restrictions and the resulting experimental wines were made mainly for family and friends. With quotas lifted in 1991, the winery was registered in time for the 1992 harvest, the first commercial release.
David Trafford, originally an architect, works alongside his wife Rita, a qualified chef and artist, overseeing all aspects of production. Today, they tend 6ha of own vineyard and source additional grapes from elsewhere in Stellenbosch, producing just 40 000 bottles, in a truly boutique operation.
