Thys Louw of Diemersdal in Durbanville has a bit of a thing for Sauvignon Blanc and in addition to the various versions he makes locally, he has now contrived to include an example from Marlborough, New Zealand in the range.

Grapes come from the Dillons Point sub-region of the Wairu Valley and the wine is made in conjunction with Ben Glover of Glover Family Vineyards. The 2021 vintage is everything you could hope for from this part of the world. Expressive aromatics of lime, grapefruit, kiwifruit plus hints of dried herbs and white pepper. The palate is rich and round (thanks to a total of five months on the lees) but there’s also bracing acidity. Well balanced with good fruit density, loads of flavour and plenty of drive. Price: R225 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
