Domaine Grier Grenache 2010

Rough rider.

Rough rider.

The Griers of Villiera in Stellenbosch embarked on an international venture in 2006 when they invested in a small vineyard in the Roussillon region in the South of France and named Domaine Grier.

Enamoured with local examples of Grenache at the moment, I was curious to try the property’s Grenache 2010 which they make for retail chain Woolworths (R79.99 a bottle). Dark fruit, spice and dried herbs but also less attractive, earthy notes and very grippy tannins. Pretty rustic stuff on the whole.

Score: 83/100.

    Hi Christian,

Always great to read your reviews!

In your opinion, what are the best examples of South African Grenache?

Hi Preet, Glad you like the blog. Best examples of SA Grenache: David from David Sadie, Momento (as made by Marelise Jansen van Rensburg who works at Beaumont), Neil Ellis, Old Vine Series Soldaat from Eben Sadie, Vriesenhof. Old vines in Piekenierskloof near Citrusdal is the motherload. Some pretty smart Grenache-led blends such as Ken Forrester The Gypsy also starting to appear.
