Eagles’ Nest Shiraz 2013

Aquiline.

The Shiraz from Eagles’ Nest in Constantia is now firmly established as one of South Africa’s leading examples of the variety and the recently released 2013 is arguably the best yet.

The vintage was relatively cool and the wine has a abv of 13.5%, a full degree lower than 2011 and 2012. It’s extraordinarily expressive on nose with notes of red and black fruit, pepper and spice, lilies and fynbos. The palate possesses a weightless intensity, the fruit pure and the finish long. It appears just a little bit scaled back compared to previous vintages (which were nothing if not rich) and this serves it very well indeed. Wine Cellar price: R260 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 95/100.
