Whatever else you might say about Stompie Meyer’s wines, you wouldn’t call them “mainstream”. Force Celeste label (previously Force Majeure but changed after a minor dispute with a US producer making wine under the same name) is his entry-level label and I’ve tended to find these wines underdone but the 2019 whites are fantastic. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Force Celeste Chenin Blanc 2019
Price: R115
Grapes from a Paardeberg vineyard. Largely fermented in stainless steel tank although some in old oak. Includes some skin contact. Top notes of potpourri and hay before lemon, orange and peach. Juicy and fresh on the palate – good fruit weight matched by tangy acidity.

CE’s rating: 90/100.

Irresistible compulsion.

Force Celeste Semillon 2019
Price: R115
Grapes again from the Paardeberg, winemaking as above. Peach, apple and tangerine with some earthy, waxy undertones. Round and pleasantly sweet on the palate. There’s also bright acidity and a little bitterness to the finish to prevent it from being too simple. Great refreshment value.

CE’s rating: 90/100.
