Grangehurst Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2001

Heavy hitter.
I’ve always thought of Jeremy Walker of Grangehurst in Stellenbosch as resolutely classical in style but his Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2001 drunk recently came across as quite modern in terms of the fruit power it showed.
Consisting of 72% Cab and 28% Merlot, it was matured for 27 months in 98% French and 2% American oak, abv 14.2%.
Colour was holding well – the rim brick red but the centre still black. On the nose, cigar box, attractive herbal character and a touch of violet-like perfume. The palate showed great density without completely sacrificing freshness, more black than red fruit and tannins nicely resolved. A convincing offering from a stalwart producer.
