Inselberg Katalyst Syrah 2023

Jacques Booysen, operations director at TecEx Medical, which focuses on import compliance and tax structures for companies in the medical and pharmaceutical industry, is also a wine enthusiast who has started his own negociant label called Inselberg.

First release is Katalyst Syrah 2023, winemaker Janno Briers-Louw of Agter-Paarl property Eenzaamheid opting for 100% whole-bunch fermentation while maturation lasted 11 months in 300- and 400-litre barrels, 40% new.

The nose shows red and black berries, cured meat plus plenty of pepper and other spice. The palate is medium-bodied, broad and open – the fruit has a succulence to it while the tannins are fine, the finish gently savoury. Not over-oaked nor over-extracted, it carries its alcohol of 14.5% well. Price: R750 a bottle.
