Joostenberg in Paarl have come up with an uncomplicated but entirely likeable drop in the form of its Family Blend Red 2015. A blend of 91% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre and 4% Viognier, all grapes are certified organic. A third of fermentation was done whole bunch while maturation lasted 10 months, 65% in older oak and 35% in tank.
On the nose, red and black berries, some peach and a little earthiness. The palate is fairly bursting with fruit and tannins are remarkably soft – hearty, honest and well suited to being thrown back in large amounts with pasta or pizza. Approximate retail price: R90 a bottle.
