Joostenberg Song of the Soil Rosé 2025

By , 17 March 2026

After last year’s Rosé Report, the question lingered: is there a ceiling to how good local rosé can be?

That year’s tasting drew 40 entries from 38 producers, with 67.5% scoring 90+. Competence is now widespread but true excellence less so. Only three wines broke 91: Waterford Rose-Mary 2025 (92), and Groot Phesantekraal 2025 plus Vinevenom Shining NV No. 4 (93).

A further standout, subsequently discovered, is Song of the Soil 2025 from Joostenberg in Paarl. 56% Mourvèdre and 44% Syrah, fermented and matured for eight months in stainless steel and concrete egg, alcohol 11.88%.

The nose shows watermelon, orange, red apple, raspberry, herbs and spice. The palate has satisfying weight – creamy but not excessively so – with well-integrated acidity and a nicely dry finish. Subtle, properly vinous, and not merely decorative. Price: R195 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
