Joostenberg The Family Blend 2016

More bounce to the ounce.

The entry-level Family Blend 2015 from Joostenberg in Paarl was a decent enough drop (see here) but the 2016 is remarkable, offering some of the best quality relative to price to be had at the moment.  Whereas the 2015 was a blend of 91% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre and 4% Viognier, the 2016 is that much more unusual and interesting consisting of 83% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, 6% Mourvèdre and 1% Touriga Nacional.

On the nose, it shows red and black berries, fresh herbs and spice. The palate is fruit-driven but not facile – pure and fresh with lovely grippy tannins, the finish long and savoury. Perhaps not as ageworthy as the top of the range Bakermat but pretty much irresistible right now. Approximate retail price: R90 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 92/100.
