The Chenin Blanc from Jordan in Stellenbosch is named after Louis Albert Péringuey, the 19th Century Inspector-General of Vineyards in the Cape, who led the fight against phylloxera and supervised the importation of American rootstocks onto which the various vineyard varieties were grafted.
Grapes from a 37-year-old vineyard, the wine consists of 70% portion fermented and matured in barrel for seven months and 30% tank fermented. The nose shows dried herbs, citrus and peach while the palate is lean and fresh despite an alcohol of 14%. Tightly wound and a bit mute currently, it probably needs a year or two in bottle to really deliver. Approximate retail price: R130 a bottle.
