Jordan The Prospector Syrah 2021

By , 8 May 2023

The stylistic shifts that are at play within the Shiraz/Syrah category are clearly illustrated by The Prospector from Jordan in Stellenbosch. Until recently, this was matured in a combination of French and American oak whereas now the latter has been dispensed with, older 225-litre French oak barrels used in conjunction with 400-litre clay amphorae where whole-bunches undergo a process of carbonic maceration.

The result in the case of the newly released 2021 is highly successful (price: R231 a bottle). With red and black berries, a hint of floral perfume, pepper and spice on the nose, the palate has good fruit density, bright acidity and fine tannins. It’s a seamless wine – just the right amount of weight and not too “stalky”. Alcohol: 13.5%.

CE’s rating: 94/100.
