Julien Schaal Mountain Vineyards Chardonnay 2021

By , 28 March 2022

There’s an effortlessness about the 2021 Julien Schaal Mountain Vineyards Chardonnay and given that it involves an Alsace winemaker who gets to work with Grand Cru Riesling vineyards, turning his hand to Elgin Chardonnay perhaps the outcome is not surprising.

Matured for nine months in 300-litre barrels of which 15% were new, the nose shows pear, white peach, citrus and a hint of struck match while the palate is marked by great fruit definition – neither too lean nor too luscious (alcohol is 13%). Driving acidity and a pithy finish also help make this a wine that’s very much on point. Price: R185 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
