Kaapzicht Steytler Pinotage 2015

Taming the beast.

Kaapzicht, the Bottelary property owned by the Steytler family, is now probably best known for its the 1947 Chenin Blanc, but the top-of-the-range Steytler Pinotage has always been one of the big guns.

The 2015 vintage (R525 a bottle from Wine Cellar) is now out. Matured for 24 months in 100% new French oak, the nose shows vanilla, milk chocolate and cinnamon notes to go with red cherry. The palate is surprisingly medium bodied given an alcohol of 14.63% – it appears slightly sweet on entry, the acidity moderate and the tannins soft while the finish is gently savoury. It’s very deftly made but arguably lacks thrill factor.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.
