Kaapzicht The 1952 Cinsault 2016
By Christian Eedes, 13 October 2017
This wine was made by Danie Steytler Jnr of Kaapzicht using grapes sourced from a 1952 block, planted on Bellevue and the second oldest in Stellenbosch– former Bellevue owner Dirke Morkel and Steytler’s father Danie Snr lifelong friends and this a tribute to them.
On the nose, red and black cherry, fresh herbs, spice and earth. The palate has a certain plumpness about it despite a modest alcohol of 12.5% – pure and fresh with some pleasant tannic grip on the finish. Quite charming and to my mind, better realized than the much vaunted Kaapzicht Skuinsberg 2015. Price: R400 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 92/100.
