Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage 2017
By Christian Eedes, 24 October 2018
Today various retailers will be making pre-release offers of the Black Label Pinotage 2017 from Stellenbosch property Kanonkop and the wine will be officially revealed to the public during a series of events taking place around the country starting 30 October.
Available for R1850 a bottle from Wine Cellar, this vintage is very, very impressive – a return to form after the slightly unconvincing 2016 and just a little behind the magisterial 2015.
Grapes from 65-year-old bush vines, the wine was matured for 18 months in French oak, 100% new. The nose shows red and black cherries, plums and hedgegrow fruit, fynbos, tilled earth and attractive oak-derived characteristics including vanilla and cinnamon – it’s deep and very alluring. The palate has huge fruit density – sweet in the best sense, almost liqueur-like – but there’s also bright acidity and the tannins are firm and pleasantly chewy. It’s a real statement wine – powerful but composed and built to last. Alcohol: 14.51%.
Editor’s rating: 95/100.
