Keermont Terrasse 2016

Under the radar.

Out of all the wines that Stellenbosch property Keermont produces the Chenin-driven Terrasse possibly doesn’t get the recognition that it’s due. The 2015 vintage rated 95 on the 100-point quality scale in the tasting for the 2017 edition of the Cape White Blend Report but the 2016 is only being released now. Tasting notes and rating as follows:

It’s a blend of 39% Chenin Blanc, 34% Sauvignon Blanc, 14% Viognier and 13% Chardonnay – remember that the infamous drought was in full swing at this time and tough growing conditions took their toll on Chenin in particular, a lower percentage appearing in the blend than usual (56% in the case of the 2015). In cellar, fermentation occurred spontaneously before maturation in older oak lasting 12 months. Alcohol is 13.44%.

The nose shows notes of flowers and hay before lime, white peach and melon with a little struck-match reduction in the background. The palate is leaner than the 2015 although hardly without weight – lovely pure fruit, lively acidity and a pithy finish. Very pure and focused. Price: R160 a bottle.
