Kottabos Grenache Syrah 2018

The 2018s under the Kottabos label as made by Reenen Borman from Polkadraai Hills fruit seem a shade less impressive than the 2017s, perhaps the inevitable effect of the drought that had yet to break. Greg Sherwood MW says he generally finds the 2018s tasted to date “less nervy” and I think that’s a good way of putting it.
Kottabos Chenin Blanc 2018
Wine Cellar price: R195
A somewhat subdued nose of naartjie, peach, a certain earthy quality plus a beer-like yeasty note. The palate has nice enough fruit expression, moderate acidity, and a gently savoury finish. Not super-intense but most accessible and appealing. Alcohol: 13%.
Editor’s rating: 90/100.
Kottabos Grenache Syrah 2018
Wine Cellar price: R195
68% Grenache and 32% Syrah. Red and black fruit, floral perfume somewhere between rose and lavender and wild herbs on the nose. Pure fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins – very well handled but not quite as thrilling as the 2017. Alcohol: 13%.
Editor’s rating: 91/100.
