Neethlingshof Malbec 2013
By Christian Eedes, 21 October 2015
Argentina is Malbec’s modern home and I’ve always wondered why a South African producer would attempt a single-variety version given that we have Pinotage. That said, the 2013 from Neethlingshof in Stellenbosch is something of a guilty pleasure.
It possesses a typical inkiness being dark in colour and super-concentrated on the palate. There are flavours of sweet black fruit and fresh herbs and while the tannins are soft, the wine is not entirely without freshness. Not highbrow but enjoyable even so. Vinotèque price: R80 a bottle.
