Neil Ellis Cinsaut Groenekloof Darling Hills 2014
By Christian Eedes, 7 October 2016
The 2014 vintage of Cinsaut from Neil Ellis is a degree lower in alcohol than the maiden 2012 and is all the better for it. From a vineyard planted some 40 years ago in the Groenekloof ward of Darling, the wine spent 16 months in 500-litre French oak barrels, 20% new.
The nose shows cherries, plums, fynbos and spice plus a slight musky quality. The palate is not without heft but possesses lovely fruit purity, snappy acidity and fine tannins. Approximate retail price: R275 a bottle.
