Neil Ellis Groenekloof Shiraz 2014

The Groenekloof Shiraz 2014 from Neil Ellis, which won gold at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show earlier this year, really is a cracker. From unirrigated bush vines, it was matured for 15 months in 500-litre puncheons, partially new. It has a classic nose of red and black fruit, spice and pepper, a hint of smokiness and some musky perfume in the background – it’s all there. There’s a robust quality to the palate but it’s not too weighty – lovely fruit purity, fresh acidity and fine tannins. Outstanding quality relative to price given that it sells for around R100 a bottle.
#WinemagRating: 94/100.
