Neil Ellis Vineyard Selection Cinsaut Noir 2012
By Christian Eedes, 15 December 2015
The Vineyard Selection Cinsaut Noir 2012 from Neil Ellis Wines presents a different take on the variety that’s rapidly becoming all the rage. Grapes from a 40-year-old Groenekloof vineyard, it’s bigger and bolder than many of its contemporaries, coming in at 15% abv and matured for 18 months in 500-litre barrels, 20% new.
The nose shows strawberry, liquorice, earth and spice. The palate is rich and broad with a slight baked quality. It’s a curiously compelling wine and will appeal in particular to those who have tended to find new-wave Cinsaut too effete. Price: R275 a bottle.
#WinemagRating: 88/100.
