Orange River Cellars Red Muscadel 2013

Cold fighter.

Cold fighter.

Muscadel from Northern Cape producer Orange River Cellars has been there or there abouts for a while now – near-desert-like conditions offset by irrigation from that river tends to full and delicious ripeness in the wines. The 2012 vintage of the Red won the trophy for best in category at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show in 2014 so what of the 2013?

On the nose, a floral top-note before strawberry, a little raisin character plus subtle spice. The palate is not as thick textured as you might expect but perhaps a little short of freshness. It aspires to seriousness but ultimately is a bit short of intensity and snap. At R55 a bottle, nobody is going to feel shortchanged, however.

Score: 87/100.
